Teaching aims:

  Key point: The structure of passive voice in past tense “was / were + v. pp. ”

  Difficult point: important words and expressions

  Teaching aids: a tape recorder, multimedia, pictures

  Teaching methods: The teaching methods will be used in this class include following three methods: Communicative Approach, Task-based Teaching Method, Audio-Lingual Approach.

  Teaching procedures:

  Step 1 Lead-in

  Hello! Everyone. Today we are going to learn a new unit. At the very beginning of this class, I want to ask you a question, and let us see, do you have enough history knowledge. If you know the answers, hands up quickly, I will invite the quickest one to answer this question. Are you ready? Ok, attention please. My question is :

  What are the greatest four inventions in ancient China?

  Step 2 Pre-listening

  Now, let us review the way of reading years first. Please look at the blackboard, how to read these years? (I will write some years on the blackboard)

  The first one, 1876. How do we read it? Eighteen seventy-six, is it right? Yes, it is right. So, what is the regular of reading these numbers? Yes, we can read the year as two parts. When we read them, we can read the first two numbers, then read the second two numbers. So take the year “1876” as an example again, we can start with “18”, then read “76”. Are you clear?

  How to read 1885? Eighteen eighty-five? Yes, it is. What about 1927? Who can have a try? Lily, please have a try. Ok, she said “nineteen twenty-seven”. Is she right? Yes, she is right! “2001”,this one is a bit special. Usually we read it as “two thousand and one”, because there are two zeros in the middle of this number.
